IMANews – February 2018 / Jamaadi al Ula 1439 AH  (Posted On February 7th, 2018 )

As salaamu alaikum

Sighting of the new moon marking the commencement of Jamadi ul Akhar is expected on Friday February 16, 2018 thus making Saturday February 17, 2018 as the first of Jamadi ul akhar.

Jamadi ul akhar is when we commemorate the wafat and birthday of  Hazrat Fatima (AS).    In the words of Dr. Ali Shariati, “Fatima is the source of the inspiration for freedom, the seekers of justice, the resisters of oppression, cruelty, crime and discrimination. Fatima is the woman that Islam wants a woman to be. She is a symbol in all the various dimensions of being a woman. The symbol of a daughter when facing her father. The symbol of a wife when facing her husband.  The symbol of a mother when facing her children. The symbol of a responsible, fighting woman when facing her time and the fate of her society.”

Majlis to commemorate wafat of Hazrat Fatima (AS)  will be on Friday February 16, 2018.  Sayyid Mohammad Baqir Kashmiri will be our guest speaker.   Sayyid Kashmiri  is Chairman and Religious Affairs Director of I.M.A.M, an organization that serves as the liaison office of the Supreme Religious Authority, Ayatullah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani, in North America.  Sayyid Kashmiri will present his thoughts on “Successful Society in point of view of Lady Fatimah(AS)”.

Programs
Friday Qur’an study circles started in January 2018 and have so far covered the suras: An Naas, Al Falaq and Iklhas. The study circle will continue working its way to the front of the Qur’an by deliberating on a short sura or a few ayats each week. Feedback from the participants has been very positive and we look forward to more people joining the study circle in the weeks ahead.
Daily and weekly programs continue at IMAN. Daily Dhuhr/Asr and Maghreb/Isha congregational prayer are scheduled at the 15th minute mark that coincides with or that follows the Dhuhr and Maghreb time for that day, whichever is earlier. Sunday School
Regular weekly school sessions are progressing with great attendance by the students and teachers. We are excited to welcome 5 new students to our community and school.
A very successful Bake Sale fundraising event for the school took place January 21, 2018 raising $1,000. Kudos and thanks to all involved, especially parent liaison team and parents for their hard work, contributions and encouragement.
On January 28th, 2018 IMAN School had its first ever field trip to Seattle Aquarium with over 20 students and chaperones participating. Those participating learned about our marine life in the Puget Sound Area and in the process also established strengthened friendship with their schoolmates.
Parent Teacher Conference is coming up on Feb 25, 2018. This will be an opportunity for parents to get a formal report of the student progress and discuss any question/concern with the teachers. Therefore, parent participation is mandatory.schoolcommittee@iman-wa.org.

Social Services
We continue to work with families approaching IMAN for assistance. We help families with their immediate needs (e.g. rent and utilities) and try to guide them with finding employment.
This month so far we have assisted 13 families. 9 of the families are refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran. 5 of the families are single mother households.
We welcome donation of clothing and household items. Please be sure that clothes are in good and clean condition and the household items are in working order.

If you are interested to help please contact imansocialservices@yahoogroups.com.

Facilities
Projectors in the middle room and lower level classrooms as well as faucets used for watering the landscape still need repairing. Last week we discovered another roof issue that caused water leak into the middle room upstairs. Br. Hossein Rezaee was able to locate and repair the leak. School Committee would like to explore the feasibility of building a playground on IMAN premises. This will require careful architectural and financial planning. We are looking someone passionate to take this on as a project and if feasible pursue it to completion.
If you have expertise in this area are willing to help, please send mail to imanfacilities@yahoogroups.com.
Outreach
IMAN hosted 5th graders from www.westsideschool.org studying World Religions for a discussion on Islam and the IMAN Center on Wednesday Janauary 17, 2018.
On Sunday February 11th, 2018 at 2:00 PM IMAN will be hosting students from a Maple Valley church for a presentation on Islam and a tour of IMAN facilities.
Br. Jawad Khaki continues to participate in the The City of Kirkland’s Inclusion Network (IN) community dialogue pilot project as part of Kirkland’s Welcoming City initiative. IN is a group of community leaders working with the City to create opportunities to make Kirkland an inclusive and welcoming place for people of all backgrounds. We are looking for more people who can participate in this important activity. The next meeting is on Thursday, March 1, 2018 6:00 PM-8:00 PM in the Council Chambers at the Kirkland City Hall. Please contact Br. Jawad is you are interested in attending.
Troy Reicherter, is the founder of the Seattle Peace Project and history teacher at Olympic Middle School in the Auburn School District, has proposed IMAN conduct dialogue circles for Meaningful Spiritual Interaction each month. Objective is for spiritual friends to share how they put the values of their faith into everyday life. For one golden hour, participants will commit to discuss those all-important things that we normally do not talk about. The first time around the circle each participant will have the an opportunity to share in brief challenges they face – anger, irritation, fear, doubt, envy, etc. – and then at length describe what steps they are taking to overcome this, and how this is working for them. The second time around will be enrichment, where participants will have an opportunity to share a gem of wisdom or inspiration that keeps them going – a story or bit of scripture, a wisdom saying, something to give others strength in tough times. The third time around the circle will be to thank one another from the heart and offer any divinely-inspired advice that may come to the participants. Our first such circle is scheduled for March 9, 2018 around 8:30 PM after Isha prayer. Please see link: https://www.hhresearch.org/events-calendar for more details on dialogue circle outline.
Everyone at IMAN is invited to attend Interfaith Friendship Dinner “Love, Compassion, Courage” 5:00-7:30 PM on Saturday March 31st, 2018 scheduled at Muslim Associations of Puget Sound 17550 NE 67th Court, Redmond, WA 98052. Please register your party and child care needs in advance at mapsredmond.org.
Troy Reicherter extends invitation to all at IMAN to a pot-luck dinner and large peace circle gathering at Amazing Grace Spiritual Center in Ballard on Sat. March 31 at 4:00. Bring a dish and a story to share (it could be from a children’s story, a movie, an inspiration passage/story from the Qur’an, or something that happened to you last week – but it should be a story with a lesson that can give people strength and inspiration). The big gathering will not be like the small gatherings, but more of a social event where people have the opportunity to meet other people from all over Seattle.
