Social Services

We help families approaching IMAN for assistance with their immediate needs (e.g. rent and utilities) and guide them with finding employment when needed.  Families are encouraged to work with organizations close to their place of residence. This month rent assistance was provided to 4 families – three of these requests were through Al Mahdi Center and one from IMAN.

Zakat ul Fitr was distributed to over 30 families in the Puget Sound area.

IMAN Executive Committee has recognized that the small social service subcommittee volunteer base cannot sustain the growing number of people who seek financial help from IMAN. Further, people who find themselves in difficult life situations are often in need of more assistance to get back on their feet than the small financial assistance that is provided.  It is for this reason, those applying for assistance to IMAN are now first redirected to contact centers which are in closer proximity to the aid applicant.  By doing so, we hope with time to grow the social service volunteer base that can come to assist people in difficult financial or health situations and also tap into a broader donor pool.

The community dinners in collaboration with St. John’s Episcopal Church are continuing last Saturday of every month.  We are looking for 6-8 dedicated IMAN volunteers on a regular and committed basis.  Around this core group we can proceed with our plan to offer an additional, IMAN led, 2nd Saturday of the month dinner at St. Johns.  Those who would like to get started and commit their time on a regular basis please send e-mail to imansocialservices@yahoogroups.com.

Please note that IMAN does not accept donation items (clothing, food, household items) for Social Services unless the committee specifically asked for them or coordinated the pick-up with the donors. There are several other local organizations that will gladly accept such donations on regular basis, including: https://worldreliefseattle.org/donate-goods

Facilities

New wireless microphone transmitter and receiver has been installed.

Vacuum cleaners  have reached the end of useful life and need to be replaced.

We are looking for volunteers to water plants around IMAN property during hot summer months. Please send e-mail to iman@iman-wa.org if you can help.

Community Service Credits

Members of the congregation who need community service credits are required to make arrangements in advance for any service provided to IMAN for which credit will be requested. Service credit certification will only be provided for eligible activities for which prior arrangement have been made and only after the eligible service have been satisfactorily completed. No exceptions will be made.

IMAN Scholar 2019

With great joy and pride we recognize Sheharbano Jafry as the IMAN Scholar 2019.

Sheharbano is an outstanding human being who exudes academic excellence and service to our community.  She has been a member of IMAN for most of her life and has been volunteering since 7th grade.  She started as a Teaching Assistant and a few years ago she became a teacher for some of the classes.

In tenth grade, she created the Refugee Alliance, a school organization that informs her school community about refugees and directly assists refugees in the Seattle area. As she was in the process of creating the club, people told her that the organization would not be able to achieve its goal, especially because it was led by high school students. However, she continued to find ways to help these underserved people.?

 ?

Sheharbano volunteered with the Catholic Community Services to tutor low-income and refugee youth in Seattle, because she has always had a desire to help other underserved students like herself.  Her interactions with these students strengthened that desire even more, so she created a free SAT/ACT class at our school and at a local low-income community center to provide assistance to students who could not afford test prep.  This past summer, she expanded her class and created the CollegeReady Program to provide free standardized preparation in Bellevue and Seattle areas.

She plans to study English and Biochemistry – a rare combination. She loves to read and write. She applied to be on school newspaper and made it.  Her interest in biochemistry lies in her desire to do research, find solutions and eventually go to medical school to become a doctor.  Sheharbano is a very curious person and uses her science knowledge to seek answers.  Whether it be in school, speech/debate tournaments, or dealing with her family problems, she is always seeking solutions. When she first joined debate team, she was discouraged because she kept losing. Rather than quitting, she embraced the failure.  She eventually gave a speech about her hijab and how it is important to not discriminate against women wearing a headscarf. This mindset eventually made her succeed and she eventually came in 4th place at the state tournament last year.

Sheharbano was born in Pakistan and moved to Bellevue as a young child.  She grew up with a single mom and her two brothers. She has faced many challenges yet she has persevered and continued to focus on her education.  ?

Sheharbano has an incredible desire to learn and succeed academically.  She is constantly seeking opportunities to better herself and the world around her.  The thing we like best about Sheharbano is her generosity.  She  shares her intellectual gifts and big heart with those even less fortunate than her.  She is a true gem!
